I went to NYC from Thursday to Sunday as a 21st birthday treat to myself. Just a quick post – here’s some of the stuff I did …
- Ate New York cheesecake, which tastes of evil.
- Saw Curtains (twice) and Chicago – John Kander will probably live off me for a week.
- Told David Hyde Pierce he’s a genius. (‘Cause I bet he never gets that …)
- Gazed at Ian McKellen and Vanessa Redgrave from a distance, but was too intimidated by their awesomeness to approach.
- Passed Rufus Wainwright on 8th Avenue … I think.
- Went into a pub solely because it was called Robert Emmetts, only to be charged $7 for a bottle of Corona. Patriotism doesn’t pay!
- Tipped a street rapper for ingeniously rhyming Eimear with ‘dreamer’. (Boston Dreamer would have been a much less strange blog title, wouldn’t it?)
- Had a mini crisis because I felt unmoved at Ground Zero.
- Got the ferry out to the Statue of Liberty, but wasn’t allowed up the plinth.
- Went to the top of the Empire State Building after midnight.
- Exercised extreme willpower in the MTV Store, the Apple Store, and M&Ms World.
- Loosely grasped the rules of baseball while watching the Yankees play the Blue … Somethings.
Some pictures … first, the NY Times. So shiny!
Blurry pic of me with DHP. It’s him, I swear.
Terrifying Statue of Liberty guys in Battery Park. They look decidedly X Files to me.
My hamfisted self-photography on the ferry over to the Statue of Liberty.
Statue of Liberty and blimp: two great American icons.
Resisting doing the torch pose.
A sculpture in Battery Park representing immigrant suffering … and a guy in a Spiderman suit. I love America.
Me in Central Park.
Beardy Ian McKellen! In a fedora! Awww …

Whetting my appetite ….! Great pic.s – glad to see you haven’t gone native – half expected either a wonder woman costume or a fedora of your own!! See you there early Oct?!
unmoved at ground zero? two words: heartless wench!
dhp looks very cool and hip and down with the kids etc with the ole baseball cap haha. this time next week we will be boogie-ing in boston! ooh fun times!
Mavis: Definitely! And you’ll love Cuirtini. Was just thinking – I had my overpriced Corona in Robert Emmett’s on the 204th anniversary of his execution/my 21st birthday! Spooky …
Speils: I know, I am a wench … but it’s hard to have a spiritual experience when there’s all these guys in hard hats and hi-vis jackets wandering around. I bet a couple of years ago it was really affecting. DHP is pretty cool, but I think Sir Ian wins in the Celeb Hat stakes … can’t wait to see ye!
Aw man, it’s such a pity the one of you and DHP is blurry, aargh! It still seriously rocks though. (As does the pic of the blimp, hee!) So what was Curtains like? Do tell.
Haha, yeah, I was a bit raging about the DHP pic at first, but now I think it’s cool and impressionistic.
Curtains was fun, a big silly musical basically. DHP is priceless, the audience loves him.
Sooo, Cardiff eh? How’s it going? You have to start a blog called Cardiff Bunnie or something.
No need to rage. I told you I’d take it again. ;
That was supposed to be a
Cardiff Bunnie, lol! I might just do that once we get broadband sorted out in the house. Maybe Jules could make me a cool bunnie banner! Cardiff is cool. It’s a lot like Dublin, to be honest! And it’s quite small, so everthing is moreorless within walking distance. We enrolled for our modules yesterday. We only have to do three, woohoo! I’m doing Gender and the Media, Issues in Primetime Television and Horror, Fantasy and the Media. Looking forward to starting them, they all sound quite fun. We’ve already sampled the night life, went to a place called the Lava Lounge which was full of y’know, lava lamps and shit. ‘Twas fun.
Ah you’re not a heartless wench,, I was pretty unmoved at Ground Zero too. Then again, my lunch almost made a reappearance when i saw a guy walk up to a soldier, shake his hand and tell him he’s doing a really great job. Jeez louise. Happy belated official birthday by the way! An excellent way to celebrate, yay!
